I’ve always believed that learning does not have to be painful. We can push through uncomfortable learning situations while simultaneously being entertained. This is my mission any time I write or direct a project. I want to push people to expand their views on race, on women, on identity, and on other social issues, while laughing, crying, or otherwise empathizing with my characters on screen.
If you tell someone, “Don’t be racist” they are likely to roll their eyes at you — or worse. But, if you hide that message inside a character driven story that is visually engaging, they are likely to agree with you. That is the power of television and film. That is what I hope to do with my life: help change a few minds without anyone even noticing that that’s what I’m doing.
